The case of the Indigo, or Lear's Macaw, Anodorhynchus leari, is unique in South American ornithology. The species, although described more than 100 years ago, was known only through very few living specimens, which entered occasionally the bird trade, without any indication of their origins. It was presumed "probably some part of Brazil" (Salvadori, 1891). The last speculation was that it was unlikely, though not impossible, that the Indigo Macaw might not be an independem species, but rather, a hybrid between the two other well known blue macaws, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus and A. glaucus (Voous, 1965). |

Association Crepidula aculeata - Amphiroa beauvoisii. Population study of Crepidula aculeata Gmelin, 1791) (Gastropoda Calyptraeidae) and analysis of protocooperative association between the mollusc and the alga were carried out in the phytal of calcareous alga Amphiroa beauvoisii Lamouroux, 1816 at Ilha das Palmas, Santos Bay (24º00'S - 46º19'W). Samples were collected at three sites of different degree of water movement in the intertidal zone and sublittoral fringe during 1975 and 1976. From 93,916 organisms belonging to 172 species, 5,331 were Crepidula, the most abundant among sessile species. Also, Crepidula constitutes a substratum to attachment of Amphiroa, accounting for 30% of total phytal area. There was a positive correlation between the growth... |

The condition of certain neglected structures and their possible importance to the classification of the family Tabanidae are studied. The front coxae are considered as belonging to two types: 1) short and robust; 2) long and slender. The posterior edge of the meso-katepimeron presents two conditions: 1) without projection, 2) with backward projection. Similar conditions are found in the meso-Katepisternum, but with intermediate conditions. These characters are discussed in relation to the system proposed for the family by Mackerras. Conditions 1 and 2 of the former two structures separate, respectively, the Pangoniinae and Scepsidinae from the Chrysopsinae and Tabaninae. Condition 2 of the third structure seems to be developing independently in different... |

The diet of some leaf-nosed frugivorous bats - Artibeus Leach, 1821, Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Sturnira lilium (e. Geoffroy, 1810) - was studied for nine consecutive months through faecal analysis of individuais captured with mist-nets in a small forest remnant of Paraná state, Brazil. The analysis revealed that Artibeus spp. exhibited preference for fruits of Ficus spp. and Carollia perspicillata for those of Piper spp., which is in accordance with the results of previous studies. But contrary to what was expected, fruit of Solanum spp. were not found for the diet of Sturnira lilium in spite of their high availabilily (16 species) in the study area and their known relationship with this bat genus. The species of consumed fruit belonged... |

The results obtained by two estimators of population sizes, MNKA and Mh, were compared for four species of small mammmals - Didelphis aurita Wied, 1826, Philander frenata (Olfers, 1818), Nectomys squamipes (Brants, 1827) and Akodon cursor (Winge, 1887) - during a long-term population study. The MNKA estimator consistently underestimated the population sizes in relation to Mh. On the other, the probabilistic estimator Mh, which reduces bias through the jackknife technique, could not be used in all cases as its assumptions were not always met. Correction factors between the estimates obtained by the two methods were calculated for the last three species, for which catchability did not vary significantly in time and that presented positive correlation between... |

Woodlice were reared in laboratory in the environmental climate of the city of Curitiba, Brazil, with the purpose of getting to know the process of formation of oostegites. Two kinds of cultivation were adopted: natural populations to be controlled were kept in small glass aquariums resembling the natural environment; and, new-bom woodlice were raised each one isolated in small plastic receptacles, with a special diet until two years old or over. When adults, after recognizing their sexes, males and females were put together to copulate during one or more days, and some of the females were fertilized. After 30 days, the fertilized females realized ecdise and acquired oostegites. The complete process (copulation, fecundation, incubation and birth) occurred... |

Morphology has been the subject of several studies in Eunice specially in the context of the taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of taxa within this genus. In this study we opt for a morphometric approach comparing five species of Eunice to assess if it was possible to delimitate them by shape variables. The morphology of E.fucata, E.insularis, E. cf. ornata, E.rubra, and Eunice sp. was compared using traditional morphometric analysis of 16 measured variables. After removing the size-effect, a Canonical Variates Analysis applied to morphometric variables was able to discriminate all species. In CV1 two major groups of species were discriminated: E.fucata/E.insularis and E. cf. ornata/E.rubra/Eunice sp. CV2 strongly discriminated all species, with E.... |
